Orchids when freshly cut are long lasting and maintain its freshness from days to several weeks. Most orchid cut flowers will retain their freshness out of water for the whole evening. However, many elements can affect how long they stay fresh. Some of them may be within your limits, while others aren’t.

Freshly orchid cut flowers depend on how they are kept. Flowers from Cymbidium orchids can last a month in a vase. For the Oncidium and Dendrobium species, often they last around a week. When flowers are utilized singly as corsages without keeping water, it certainly won’t last longer than a day.

Susceptibility to Ethylene

Ethylene is a hormone that modulates the maturing and death in plants. Phalaenopsis, Oncidium and Dendrobium orchids are exceedingly sensitive to it. When the orchid’s flowers start to inseminate, it receives a message that blooms are no longer required, and they begin to fade. You should avoid striking the pollen or eliminating the pollen caps. You can have ethylene inside your house in the form of a ripening fruit, so if you have orchid cut flowers in vases, keep them away from the fruit bowl to ensure longevity.

The Best Time to Cut

Orchids are best and last longer when purchased right when the flowers start to open rather than after its fully opened. Do not cut the orchids when buds are closed, as flowering will stop when the spike is cut-off. So when selecting bouquets or selecting sprays of orchids on their own, search for branches that have the more than one bud opened. Keeping in Cold Storage

Orchids once cut can be kept at temperatures just above freezing, so don’t worry if the flowers you buy are kept in cold storages. Once you get orchid cut flowers, keep them in a vase at room temperature. However, for cooler conditions, they may even last longer. As we all know, florists relocate orchid species at temperatures between 50 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. When kept cooler, they may last a bit longer.
